Episode 7. Japan Setouchi Triennale Art Festival

The Setouchi International Art Triennale is a contemporary art festival held every three years on the islands in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan.  With the purpose of revitalizing the Seto Inland Sea area, the festival started in 2010.  The festival features numerous artworks by artists from both Japan and overseas, many of whom make use of abandoned homes to host or even become their art installations.   Some installations are also permanent including works from Yayoi Kusama.  The Triennale lasts for eight months with three main sessions; the spring session runs from March to mid-April, the summer session runs from mid-July to early September, and the autumn session runs from October to early November.  My wife and I went in the summer of 2016 and we enjoyed the festival very much.   Hope these videos will give up glimpses of what to see in the festival.

Episode 5. Verona Opera Festival

Verona Arena Festival is a summer festival of opera held in the Arena di Verona each year since 1936.  The Arena di Verona is an ancient Roman amphitheatre, which is capable of holding 30,000 spectators.  Performances typically start at dusk and last into the night.  My wife and I were there exactly ten years ago when we saw Aida.  It was quite an experience to see an opera in an ancient theatre and try to relive history.  Everyone was holding a candle as night falls... a memorable and touching scene!

Episode 3. Mongolia Naadam Festival

Naadam Festival is the biggest national holiday in Mongolia and is celebrated across the country. The festival has a history of over a thousand years and is often called the Mongolian Olympics.  The major event is celebrated in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, but there are smaller provincial celebrations across the country. The Naadam festival has three main sporting events: wrestling, archery and horse riding. All of these events are taken very seriously.  The event is held from Jul 11 - 15 each year - unfortunately this year the event is postponed due to the pandemic.  If we find out when it will be held, we will share the information here.

Episode 1. Japan Summer Fireworks Festival (Hanabi Festival 花火大會)

The Japan Summer Fireworks Festival features firework shows held in many different locations throughout Japan in the summer months of July and August.  In addition to fireworks, the shows are often accompanied with food and game stalls and visitors often dress in traditional attire to immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere.  The tradition dates back over several hundred years to the Edo period (said to date back to 1733), where fireworks were launched as festivals for the dead in the Sumidagawa 隅田川 area in Tokyo.
